CHOQUECHAKA TRECK

Nevado Alancoma via the Queñua Forest Route – 4 Days / 3 Nights

The Choquechaca Trek is far more than a hike through the Andes; it is a journey back in time. This route follows the very trails once walked by pre-Inca civilizations and later by the Incas, when the Sacred Valley was a living territory of gods, sacred mountains, and protective spirits.

Departing from Ollantaytambo, the path gradually unfolds into a deep and silent valley. The trail winds past agricultural terraces, ancient water channels, and original Inca pathways — enduring witnesses of a civilization that understood the mountains as living beings and humanity as respectful travelers within their domain. With every step, the earth feels ancient, as though it still remembers.

The trek leads toward Pumamarca, a pre-Inca ceremonial site dedicated to the Puma God — guardian of strength and balance. Here, the stones whisper stories of ancient rituals, of a time when power was not imposed but humbly requested from the mountains. The profound silence of the site surrounds the traveler, marking the beginning of a spiritual journey as much as a physical one.

Further along, the valley narrows and the landscape transforms. The sound of the Choquechaca River accompanies the walk as the trail enters one of the most sacred and fragile ecosystems in the Andes: the queñua (Polylepis) forests. Some of these millennia-old trees — many over five hundred years old — withstand harsh winds and freezing temperatures at elevations above 4,000 meters (13,100 ft), standing like silent guardians of Andean memory. Walking among them feels like entering a natural sanctuary where time itself seems suspended.

On the second day, the trek ascends toward high mountain passes, reaching elevations close to 4,750 meters (15,583 ft), where the air grows thin and the landscape opens into shimmering lakes, vast highland plains, and towering peaks that seem to touch the sky. Here, alpacas graze freely in their natural habitat, and the immensity of the surroundings reminds travelers of their smallness before the grandeur of the Andes.

The descent into the Tastayoc Valley gradually brings warmth back to the landscape before continuing toward Hidroeléctrica and finally arriving in Aguas Calientes. Yet the spirit of the Choquechaca Trek does not end there. The journey culminates at Machu Picchu, where the precisely carved stones of the sacred citadel seem to complete the circle begun days before — from ancestral pathways to the heart of the Inca world.

This trek is designed for those who seek more than a destination. It is for travelers who wish to understand, to feel, and to remember. A route where history is not merely explained in words, but walked, breathed, and honored — step by step.
